# How does The Princess and Curdie develop the theme of Sacrifice and Service?

> The Princess and Curdie by George MacDonald

## Answer

The Princess and Curdie by George MacDonald develops Sacrifice and Service across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Curdie leaves his family and risks his life to serve the king and princess, and Irene stays awake night after night to care for her father. The book praises those who put others before themselves, showing that true nobility comes from humble, loving service rather than rank or wealth.

Curdie's choice to stay with his parents is seen as a righteous sacrifice, and the king values it over offers to die for him.

The Lady has kept Peter poor as a privilege, and she is training Curdie for a work that will require him to leave his family.

Curdie is called to leave his family and home for a mission, embodying the idea of service to a higher purpose.
