# How does The Powerhouse develop the theme of Order vs. Chaos?

> The Powerhouse by John Buchan

## Answer

The Powerhouse by John Buchan develops Order vs. Chaos across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Lumley's Powerhouse represents a force of anarchic destruction aimed at undermining civilization, while Leithen, as a lawyer and MP, embodies the established social and legal order that must defend itself against this hidden threat.

The host's argument that civilization is a thin thread over barbarism and his vision of a counter-compact of anarchy directly confront the theme of order versus chaos.

Lumley's death dismantles his criminal empire, leaving his network leaderless; the narrator reflects on the 'vast subterranean machine' now reduced to 'old iron.'
