Patriarchy and Women's Oppression

Women in the play are trapped in a patriarchal system where they are treated as property, subjected to male violence, and denied agency. Anísya, Akoulína, and Marína all suffer under the control of fathers, husbands, and lovers, with their bodies and fates decided by men.
