Concepts
Ideas that structure The Portent by George MacDonald — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Second Sight and the Supernatural
The narrative is built around the Highland belief in 'second sight' and other psychic phenomena, such as prophetic visions, somnambulism, and the ability to influence others through willpower, which shape the characters' fates and relationships.
Love and Sacrifice
The central romance between Duncan and Lady Alice is marked by intense devotion, mutual sacrifice, and the willingness to endure separation, madness, and social ostracism for the sake of their bond, ultimately leading to a reunion and peaceful life.
Madness and Identity
Lady Alice's apparent madness and her dual existence—one in waking life and another in somnambulic states—raise questions about the nature of the self, the reliability of perception, and whether her true identity is revealed in her trances or in her daily demeanor.
Nature and the Highland Landscape
The wild, desolate hills and mountains of Argyll serve as both a physical and spiritual backdrop, reflecting Duncan's inner life, providing solitude and refuge, and being imbued with folklore, storms, and supernatural portents that mirror the emotional turmoil of the characters.
The Power of Will and Desire
Duncan's intense longing for Lady Alice manifests as a psychic force that can summon her in her sleep, illustrating how unchecked desire can cross boundaries between the conscious and unconscious, and between the living and the dreamlike, with both enchanting and dangerous con…
Fate and Destiny
The narrative is steeped in fatalism, from the prophetic 'clanking shoe' that heralds doom to the coincidental births of Duncan and Alice in the same month and year, suggesting that their union is preordained despite obstacles, tragedies, and the passage of time.
Memory and the Past
The story explores how memories of childhood, lost love, and ancestral tales persist and shape present actions, with Duncan's return to his homeland and the retelling of the legend of the two brothers underscoring the inescapable influence of history on identity and relationsh…
Isolation and Connection
Characters experience profound isolation—Duncan in his solitary hilltop youth, Alice in her madness and confinement—yet their psychic and emotional connection transcends physical distance, offering a path from loneliness to intimacy and mutual healing.
Art and Expression
The book emphasizes the role of poetry, song, and storytelling as outlets for emotion and as bridges between inner and outer worlds, as seen in Alice's spontaneous singing, Duncan's verses, and the oral legends that carry cultural and personal meaning.
