## Snapshot

A country nobleman and Alice's guardian, whose household and motives shadow the narrator's arrival and whose authority Alice quietly defies.

## Who they are

Lord Hilton offers the narrator his first post as tutor, a position that places Duncan inside a family already tangled in old alliances and unspoken wrongs. As Alice's guardian, he holds power over her fortune and her freedom, and she accuses him and Lady Hilton of keeping her ignorant to serve their own ends. His presence looms over the early chapters as a quiet obstacle to the love and truth the narrator and Alice are groping toward.
