# Lady Hilton — The Portent character guide

> Lady Hilton in The Portent by George MacDonald.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0005-iv-hilton-hall

## Snapshot

Alice's stepmother and mistress of Hilton Hall, whose watchful interference in the schoolroom threatens the fragile awakening she is trying to suppress.

## Who they are

Lady Hilton rules her household with a vigilance that Alice reads as deliberate cruelty — keeping her stepdaughter ignorant, isolated, and dependent. Her repeated summons of Alice from the study, and the tears and defiance they provoke, mark her as the chief obstacle to the narrator's work and to Alice's growth. Her motives remain partly hidden, but her presence gives the early chapters their atmosphere of quiet, domestic menace.
