Concepts
Ideas that structure The Plastic Age by Percy Marks — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Coming of Age and Identity
The novel follows Hugh Carver's journey through college as he grapples with self-discovery, disillusionment, and the painful transition from adolescence to adulthood, questioning his values, relationships, and purpose.
College Life: Idealism vs. Reality
The book contrasts the romanticized vision of college as a place of noble learning and brotherhood with the actual experiences of hazing, fraternity politics, drinking, gambling, and moral confusion.
Sexuality and Morality
The narrative explores the tension between sexual desire and moral ideals, including petting, promiscuity, 'smut sessions,' and the struggle to define love versus mere physical attraction.
Social Class and Fraternity Snobbery
Fraternities serve as a microcosm of social hierarchy, where wealth, prep school background, and family status determine acceptance, while characters like Carl Peters struggle with feelings of inadequacy and the desire for aristocratic belonging.
Alcohol and Excess
Drinking is a pervasive element of campus life, symbolizing both rebellion and escapism, with characters using alcohol to recapture youthful thrills or cope with emotional turmoil.
Love and Romantic Confusion
Hugh's relationships with Helen, Janet, and especially Cynthia illustrate the difficulty of distinguishing genuine love from infatuation, sexual attraction, and societal expectation.
Education and Intellectual Awakening
The book contrasts uninspired classroom learning with the genuine intellectual growth that occurs through bull sessions, mentorship (e.g., Professor Henley), and personal struggle.
Disillusionment and Loss of Innocence
Hugh's college years shatter his naive beliefs about professors, fraternities, and himself, leading to a painful but necessary recognition of human imperfection and complexity.
