# Jimmie Henley — The Plastic Age character guide

> Jimmie Henley in The Plastic Age by Percy Marks.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Henley

**First appearance:** 0003-ii

## Snapshot

A composition instructor with a brier pipe and a tongue sharp enough to tell a lazy undergraduate the truth about his talent.

## Who they are

Henley is that rare professor who teaches rather than professes, reading Hugh's first drafts and naming them for what they are without cruelty or flattery. His warning — that natural gift without effort earns only a C — plants the question of what Hugh might become if he tried. He matters because he is the one adult in the book who treats Hugh as a writer and a mind, not just a boy to be managed.
