# Ananda — The Pilgrim Kamanita character guide

> Ananda in The Pilgrim Kamanita by Karl Gjellerup.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Brother Ananda, that simpleminded Ananda

**First appearance:** 0002-i-the-lord-buddha-revisits-the-city-of-the-five-hills

## Snapshot

The Buddha's gentle attendant, whose simplehearted devotion makes him the warm human counterweight to the Master's austere teaching.

## Who they are

As the Buddha's close companion, Ananda moves between the monastic company and the world outside it, greeting arriving monks, tending the sick, and asking the plain questions that let the doctrine unfold. His reputation for simplicity is both his charm and his vulnerability: he loves the Master personally, not merely the truth he teaches, and that attachment colors how he receives hard sayings. In the early arc he anchors the Rajagriha scenes, giving the reader a familiar, feeling presence through whom the more demanding wisdom is filtered.
