The Buddha, nearing the end of his earthly life, returns to Rajagriha and reflects on his past struggles and spiritual journey. He bids farewell to the beloved city and decides to avoid the noisy monastery, seeking solitude in a suburban shelter for the night.
Chapter 4
II: The Meeting
The Buddha, on his alms round, passes by houses of fowlers, quarrelers, revellers, and butchers, rejecting each as impure, until he arrives at a potter's house where a young pilgrim (Kamanita) is already staying. The Buddha joins him, and after a period of silent meditation, he asks the pilgrim why he became homeless, and the pilgrim begins to tell his story.
Chapter 5
To the Banks of the Gunga
Kamanita recounts his youth in Ujjeni, his education, and his first merchant journey to Kosambi in the train of an embassy. He describes the awe-inspiring sight of the confluence of the Jumna and Gunga rivers, the majestic city of Kosambi, and his successful business dealings with the help of his father's friend Panada. The chapter ends with Kamanita enjoying the pleasures of Kosambi in the company of Somadatta.
