## Who they are

Moncharmin shares the directorship with Richard but not his bluster; he is the one who admits, in his own tangled prose, to seeing a death's-head shape in Box Five while Richard saw an old woman. He and Richard clasp hands in the dark, compare hallucinations, and laugh like madmen to cover their fear. His Memoirs of a Manager become a key document of the haunting, and his growing dread — recorded, rationalized, and never quite dismissed — gives the ghost's campaign its slow, corrosive power over the men in charge.
