Concepts
Ideas that structure The Perfume of Eros by Edgar Saltus — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Marriage
The book explores how marriage is driven by social status, wealth, and family expectations rather than love, as seen in Fanny's pursuit of a wealthy match and Marie's desire to escape her lower-class origins through Loftus.
Love and Deception
Romantic relationships are built on lies and false promises, particularly Loftus's manipulation of Marie, who believes he will marry her while he only intends to keep her as a mistress.
Gender Roles and Power
Women are portrayed as objects of desire and social ambition, while men hold economic and social power, dictating the terms of relationships and leaving women vulnerable to abandonment and disgrace.
Wealth and Materialism
The narrative emphasizes the importance of money, luxury, and possessions in defining identity and social worth, from Fanny's obsession with clothes to Loftus's lavish lifestyle and the stock market speculation that drives the characters.
Appearance vs. Reality
Characters present polished, respectable facades that hide their true motives and moral corruption, such as Loftus's charm masking his cruelty, and the social veneer of Gramercy Park contrasting with the sordid affairs within.
Betrayal and Heartbreak
The book centers on romantic betrayals—Loftus's broken promises to Marie, Annandale's drunken lapse that wounds Sylvia, and Fanny's regret after marrying the wrong man—showing how trust is shattered and lives are altered.
Fate and Free Will
Characters struggle between their choices and the forces of destiny, as seen in Sylvia's regret over dismissing Annandale, Fanny's acceptance of a flawed marriage, and the fortune-teller's predictions that hint at inevitable outcomes.
Scandal and Reputation
The fear of social disgrace drives characters' actions, from Marie's shame at being a kept woman to Fanny's mother's obsession with appearances, and the public's fascination with Loftus's murder reveals how reputation can be destroyed overnight.
