The Patient in Room 18

I: An Unpleasant Dinner Party

The gathering includes Dr. Letheny, Corole, Maida Day, Jim Gainsay, Dr. Balman, and the narrator. Tensions simmer beneath polite conversation: Corole flirts with Gainsay, who is clearly attracted to Maida; Dr. Balman expresses bitterness about wasted hospital funds; and Dr. Letheny plays a piano piece that creates an oppressive, nightmarish atmosphere. After the party, the narrator and Maida return to the hospital, where the narrator reflects on the unsettling history of Room 18 and the strange, heavy night.
Chapter 4
II: In Room 18
On a stormy night, nurse Sarah Keate tends to patients while Dr. Letheny visits Mr. Jackson, who is undergoing radium treatment. After Dr. Letheny leaves, a power outage plunges the hospital into darkness. Keate discovers Mr. Jackson dead from an apparent morphine overdose, with signs of murder. The radium has been stolen. Keate and nurse Maida Day struggle to manage the crisis, unable to find Dr. Letheny or rouse the janitor Higgins. Drs. Hajek and Balman arrive to investigate.
Chapter 5
III: Dr. Letheny Does Not Return
Sarah Keate is interrogated by detective Lance O'Leary about the events surrounding Mr. Jackson's death. She describes hearing a dull sound, finding the patient dead, and her collision with a man running around the hospital. Later, she learns that Dr. Letheny has disappeared, and the police suspect him of stealing radium. The hospital is in turmoil, and Keate becomes a suspect herself. She eventually meets O'Leary, who questions her closely.
