# Dick Bewery — The Paradise Mystery character guide > Dick Bewery in The Paradise Mystery by J. S. Fletcher. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Dick, Bewery, young Bewery, young Dick **First appearance:** 0000-i-only-the-guardian ## Snapshot A schoolboy with a confidential streak, Dick Bewery ferries town gossip home to his guardian and sister before he has finished his cold pie. ## Who they are Dick is the youngest member of Dr. Ransford's household, a schoolboy who trades in the talk of Wrychester's town boys and reports it across the dining table with a side-glance at his sister Mary. His eagerness to be useful collides with the adult habit of keeping him half-informed, and Ransford's dry correction — that he has no knowledge of Braden ever entering the house — only deepens the puzzle Dick thinks he is solving. His loose tongue and loyal instincts make him the story's early conduit for the rumors that will harden into suspicion. ## Relationships ### [Mary Bewery](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/mary_bewery) _family_ Dick Bewery is Mary's brother, sharing a close but occasionally strained sibling bond. ### [Dr. Mark Ransford](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/dr_mark_ransford) _psychological_ Dick Bewery is suspicious of Dr. Ransford's influence over his sister, sensing a manipulative dynamic. ### [Mary Bewery](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/mary_bewery) _family_ Dick Bewery is Mary's brother, sharing a close but occasionally strained sibling bond. ### [Dr. Mark Ransford](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/dr_mark_ransford) _psychological_ Dick Bewery is suspicious of Dr. Ransford's influence over his sister, sensing a manipulative dynamic. ### [Mary Bewery](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/mary_bewery) _family_ Dick Bewery is Mary's brother, sharing a close but occasionally strained sibling bond. ### [Dr. Mark Ransford](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/dr_mark_ransford) _psychological_ Dick Bewery is suspicious of Dr. Ransford's influence over his sister, sensing a manipulative dynamic. ## In the story ### [Only the Guardian](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/i-only-the-guardian) Mary's younger brother, a schoolboy of seventeen; he is studying Latin at breakfast and has recently begun asking questions about his origins. ### [II: Making an Enemy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/ii-making-an-enemy) Mentioned as the brother of Mary, also subject to the curiosity of Wrychester residents. ### [V: The Scrap of Paper](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/v-the-scrap-of-paper) Seen with a girl near the Deanery Walk, excited about the morning's events. ### [The Double Trail](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/vii-the-double-trail) Reports town gossip about Varner's testimony regarding the cuff links. ### [The Best Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/viii-the-best-man) Mentioned as the son of Mary Bewery and John Brake; not directly present in this chapter. ### [The House of His Friend](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/ix-the-house-of-his-friend) Mentioned as Mary's brother, also a child of John Brake. ### [XI: The Back Room](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xi-the-back-room) Dick brings the town gossip to the lunch table, telling Ransford that people believe Braden came to the house. ### [XII: Murder of the Mason’s Labourer](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xii-murder-of-the-mason-s-labourer) Sent to fetch Dr. Coates and police after Collishaw's body is discovered. ### [Beforehand](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xvi-beforehand) Dick encounters Bryce in Paradise and reveals the ongoing search by Mitchington and others; he leads Bryce to a hidden vantage point. ### [XVII: To Be Shadowed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xvii-to-be-shadowed) Bursts in with news of the jewel discovery and the night digging in Paradise. ### [Surprise](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xviii-surprise) Young Bewery informed Bryce of the police activity in Paradise, leading Bryce to watch and involve Harker. ### [The Saxonsteade Arms](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xxi-the-saxonsteade-arms) Mentioned as one of John Brake's children, living as Ransford's wards. ### [Other People's Notions](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xxii-other-people-s-notions) Mentioned as being at school; not directly present. ### [The Guarded Secret](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/chapters/xxvii-the-guarded-secret) Brings news of the double death at Folliot's and presses Ransford for the truth about his father's death. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters/dick_bewery - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_paradise_mystery_se/characters
