# Sir Walter Lovel — The Old English Baron character guide

> Sir Walter Lovel in The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Walter, Sir Walter

**First appearance:** 0002-the-old-english-baron

## Snapshot

The late Lord Lovel's younger brother, who sold the ancestral castle to the Fitz-Owens and retreated north, leaving behind a fortune and a reputation no one cares to discuss.

## Who they are

Sir Walter is the brother who should have protected the Lovel name and heir, yet he married his sister into the Fitz-Owen family and parted with the castle of his ancestors, retiring to Northumberland. The peasant's account of him is flat and evasive, as though the neighbourhood has learned not to ask too many questions. His convenient absence and the silence surrounding his brother's death make him the shadow the early story keeps circling.
