> Old Joseph in The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Joseph

**First appearance:** 0002-the-old-english-baron

## Snapshot

A gray-haired servant who remembers the castle under its true lords, he keeps his silence and his loyalties with equal care.

## Who they are

Old Joseph has served at Castle Lovel long enough to recall the days of the Lovel family and the sorrows that followed their fall. Now a humble retainer under the Fitz-Owens, he watches Edmund with an attention that seems to exceed mere kindness toward a fellow servant. His memory of the old household and his quiet devotion make him a keeper of the past that the present would rather forget.
