# Master William Fitz-Owen — The Old English Baron character guide

> Master William Fitz-Owen in The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** William, Mr. William, Fitz-Owen

**First appearance:** 0002-the-old-english-baron

## Snapshot

The baron's eldest son, courteous where his brothers are cruel, befriends the low-born boy his family would rather keep in the stables.

## Who they are

William Fitz-Owen is heir to Castle Lovel and, unlike his siblings, treats Edmund as a companion rather than a menial. His affection for the foundling puts him at odds with the pride of his house and complicates his own prospects as a nobleman's son. In the early chapters he is the proof that good blood and good manners do not always run together, and his friendship becomes one of Edmund's few protections.
