> Lady Emma in The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Emma, fair Emma

**First appearance:** 0002-the-old-english-baron

## Snapshot

The Baron's daughter, whose gentle regard for the household's least-favoured youth sets her at odds with her brothers and quietly raises the stakes of every family quarrel.

## Who they are

Emma is the daughter of Castle Lovel's new lord, sheltered, kind, and increasingly drawn to Edmund despite the contempt her brothers heap on him. Her affection is a quiet act of defiance in a house where rank is everything and origins are scrutinised. Because she sees Edmund's worth when others will not, her loyalty becomes one of the story's central tests of character.
