## Who they are

John Wyatt is a poor but upright cottager whose family lives under the protection of the Lord Fitz-Owen. When Sir Philip Harclay arrives seeking news of the Lovels, Wyatt offers him shelter and sends his son John running to the castle to announce the stranger's coming, a courtesy that briefly irritates the knight. His plain decency and his careful respect for his betters mark him as one of the novel's moral touchstones among the common folk.
