> Edmund Twyford in The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Master Edmund, young Edmund, Mr. Edmund, Edmund

**First appearance:** 0002-the-old-english-baron

## Snapshot

Raised a peasant in another man's castle, this gentle, quick-witted youth carries a noble bearing no one can quite explain away.

## Who they are

Edmund grows up as a dependent in the household of Baron Fitz-Owen, where his courtesy and courage set him apart from the servants yet leave him vulnerable to the scorn of the baron's sons. His modest birth is a puzzle even to himself, and the loyalty he inspires in old retainers and visiting knights hints at a buried claim. His fortunes in the early chapters turn on whether his merit can survive a world that measures men by pedigree.
