Chapter 1

Chapter 4
II: The Last Redoubt
The Narrator describes the Last Redoubt, a great pyramid housing the last millions of humanity in a future world of eternal night, besieged by monstrous creatures and dark forces. He recounts his visions of this future, where he awakens as a youth within the Redoubt, and details the surrounding terrors: the House of Silence, the Road Where the Silent Ones Walk, the South-East Watcher, the Giants' Pit, and the Country Whence Comes the Great Laughter. The chapter also touches on his personal grief for Mirdath and his hope of reunion through transcendence.
Chapter 5
The Quiet Calling
The Narrator describes his unique gift of Night-Hearing, which allows him to perceive vibrations in the æther. He recounts how he first heard a voice from the darkness—a girl who called herself Mirdath but later revealed her true name as Naani, having been inspired by an old story. This contact confirms the existence of a second, smaller Redoubt in the Night Lands, a place long rumored but doubted. The news spreads through the Great Redoubt, causing excitement and renewed study of ancient records. However, evil forces in the Night Land begin to mimic the calls, using cunning false messages to tempt the unwary, forcing the use of a secret Master-Word to verify true communication.
