Concepts
Ideas that structure The New State by Mary Parker Follett — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Group Process as the Foundation of True Democracy
The book argues that genuine democracy is not majority rule or representative government, but a process of 'interpenetration' within small groups, where collective ideas, feelings, and wills are created through integration rather than aggregation or compromise.
Critique of Individualism and Particularism
The author rejects laissez-faire individualism and 'everyman-for-his-own-interests' as false individualism, asserting that true self-fulfillment comes through integration with the whole, not through separation or altruistic service to others.
Neighborhood Organization as the Political Unit
The book proposes that neighborhoods should be organized into regular, self-governing groups that become the recognized political unit, replacing party systems and enabling citizens to directly participate in and shape state and city governance.
Rejection of Crowd Psychology and Mass Rule
The text distinguishes the 'group' (governed by interpenetration and conscious creation) from the 'crowd' (governed by suggestion and imitation), warning that democracy must not become crowd rule, which suppresses individuality and rational thought.
Integration of Occupational and Neighborhood Groups
The book advocates for a state that recognizes both neighborhood and occupational (economic) groups, arguing that labor, capital, and other functional groups must be integrated into the state's structure to overcome industrial conflict and create a unified, service-oriented so…
The Unifying State vs. Political Pluralism
While engaging with pluralist ideas, the author champions a 'unifying state' that does not absorb groups but integrates them, creating a whole where multiple loyalties (to family, trade union, nation) are compounded into a single, coherent allegiance.
Education for Social Citizenship and Group Life
The book emphasizes that democracy and group consciousness must be learned from childhood through cooperative education, group recitations, and self-governing activities, replacing individual competition with training in interdependence and collective responsibility.
Transformation of Law and Justice Through Group Principles
The text discusses how legal theory is moving from contract-based, individualistic conceptions toward recognizing the 'real personality' of groups, and how criminal justice should focus on reintegrating offenders into the community rather than mere punishment.
