# Sir George Farquhar — The Nebuly Coat character guide

> Sir George Farquhar in The Nebuly Coat by John Meade Falkner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Farquhar, Sir George, George

**First appearance:** 0004-iv

## Snapshot

A baronet-architect who builds railway stations and churches alike, he dispatches young Westray to Cullerne with warnings about amateurs and a tower he'd rather not discuss.

## Who they are

Sir George Farquhar is senior partner of Farquhar and Farquhar, the firm entrusted with restoring Cullerne Minster, and a man whose professional contempt for the Society-for-the-Conservation-of-National-Inheritances rings with practiced authority. He sends his understudy Westray to superintend the work while quietly admitting there is no money and some old trouble in the central tower he has chosen not to raise. His blend of worldly pragmatism and selective silence sets the restoration's uneasy terms and plants the first hint that Cullerne's fabric conceals more than masonry problems.
