# Canon Parkyn — The Nebuly Coat character guide

> Canon Parkyn in The Nebuly Coat by John Meade Falkner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Parkyn

**First appearance:** 0002-ii

## Snapshot

The pompous clergyman who guards Cullerne Minster, dismissed by his own architect as a foolish old fellow yet surprisingly effective at extracting restoration funds from reluctant pockets.

## Who they are

Canon Parkyn serves as legal guardian of Cullerne Minster, a man Sir George Farquhar calls no more fit than a lady's-maid to be trusted with such a church, yet who has not done badly in collecting money for the restoration. His self-importance and clerical dignity chafe against the practical demands of overseeing a crumbling medieval fabric and the professionals sent to repair it. As the local representative of institutional authority, he becomes a natural foil for Westray's investigations and a barometer of how Cullerne's respectable surface strains against what lies beneath.
