# Daddy Jacques — The Mystery of the Yellow Room character guide > Daddy Jacques in The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Jacques, Daddy **First appearance:** 0001-the-mystery-of-the-yellow-room ## Snapshot The loyal old servant who was in the laboratory when the murder cry rang out, and whose attic sits directly above the Yellow Room. ## Who they are Daddy Jacques is the honest, garrulous servant whose testimony provides the first detailed account of the night of the crime. He was cleaning instruments in the laboratory, heard Mademoiselle lock her door, heard the cat miaow, and then heard the desperate cry and the revolver shots. His attic room above the Yellow Room makes him both a witness and a potential witness to any escape route, and his simple, affectionate loyalty to Mademoiselle — 'Daddy Jacques is an honest man and very attached to me' — makes his account both credible and incomplete. He is the reader's first guide into the facts of the case, and his limitations as a narrator are part of the mystery's design. ## Relationships ### [Joseph Rouletabille](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/joseph_rouletabille) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a loyal and helpful ally to Rouletabille, often assisting him with local knowledge and support. ### [Frédéric Larsan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/frederic_larsan) _rivalry_ Daddy Jacques distrusts Larsan and often works against his methods, creating a tense opposition. ### [Mademoiselle Stangerson](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/mademoiselle_stangerson) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a protective and caring figure toward Mademoiselle Stangerson, acting as a loyal servant. ### [The Green Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/the_green_man) _rivalry_ Daddy Jacques actively tries to expose and capture the Green Man, viewing him as a threat. ### [Daddy Mathieu](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/daddy_mathieu) _social_ Daddy Jacques and Daddy Mathieu are fellow servants and acquaintances who share information about the case. ### [Joseph Rouletabille](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/joseph_rouletabille) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a loyal and helpful ally to Rouletabille, often assisting him with local knowledge and support. ### [Frédéric Larsan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/frederic_larsan) _rivalry_ Daddy Jacques distrusts Larsan and often works against his methods, creating a tense opposition. ### [Mademoiselle Stangerson](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/mademoiselle_stangerson) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a protective and caring figure toward Mademoiselle Stangerson, acting as a loyal servant. ### [Joseph Rouletabille](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/joseph_rouletabille) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a loyal and helpful ally to Rouletabille, often assisting him with local knowledge and support. ### [Mademoiselle Stangerson](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/mademoiselle_stangerson) _friendship_ Daddy Jacques is a protective and caring figure toward Mademoiselle Stangerson, acting as a loyal servant. ### [Frédéric Larsan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/frederic_larsan) _rivalry_ Daddy Jacques distrusts Larsan and often works against his methods, creating a tense opposition. ### [The Green Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/characters/the_green_man) _rivalry_ Daddy Jacques actively tries to expose and capture the Green Man, viewing him as a threat. ## In the story ### [In Which We Begin Not to Understand](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mystery_of_the_yellow_room_se/chapters/i-in-which-we-begin-not-to-understand) The old servant who was in the laboratory with Professor Stangerson and discovered the locked room;
