> Lady Tamplin in The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Tamplin, Viscountess Tamplin

**First appearance:** 0009-viii-lady-tamplin-writes-a-letter

## Snapshot

A charming, calculating socialite who takes in her newly rich cousin Katherine, seeing in her a fresh source of income and reflected glamour.

## Who they are

Lady Tamplin presides over a villa in Nice with an eye fixed firmly on advantage, welcoming Katherine Grey less out of family feeling than out of hope that her cousin's inheritance will prove useful. Her breezy snobbery and casual schemes are played for comedy, but they also expose the transactional nature of the society Katherine has entered. By drawing Katherine onto the Riviera at the moment of the Kettering scandal, she unwittingly places her cousin at the edge of the mystery.
