Domini arrives to take depositions in a case that looks simple and keeps refusing to stay so, hearing from worthy Courtois that the Trémorels were devoted while the house itself tells another story. Earnest and a little overshadowed by sharper minds like Plantat and Lecoq, he represents the official machinery of justice moving at its own cautious pace. His early rulings and interrogations set the frame the detectives must work within or around.
