Jenny, once kept by the count and since abandoned, has slid into drink and disreputable company, yet she repays four hundred and eighty francs the moment money reaches her. That windfall, arriving precisely when Trémorel needed something done, makes her a living thread between his old life and the crime. Lecoq hunts her through Mme. Charman's establishment because she may know what the count was buying with his last secrecy.
