The story opens with John Jasper emerging from an opium den, then assuming his respectable role as choirmaster in Cloisterham. Edwin and Neville Landless, a newcomer with a troubled past, clash over Rosa, leading to a public quarrel. After a dinner at Jasper's gatehouse, Edwin disappears, and Neville becomes the prime suspect. Six months later, no body has been found, and Jasper relentlessly pursues Neville while secretly continuing his opium habit. Rosa, terrified by Jasper's confession of love and threats, flees to her guardian, Mr. Grewgious, who devises a plan with Mr. Crisparkle and Mr. Tartar to protect her and watch Jasper. A mysterious stranger, Mr. Datchery, arrives in Cloisterham and begins investigating, hinting that the mystery is far from over. The novel breaks off mid-investigation, leaving Edwin's fate and Jasper's guilt unresolved.
