Chapter 1
I: Iceboating on the Bay
Frank and Joe Hardy, along with their friend Chet Morton, enjoy iceboating on Barmet Bay. They discuss the upcoming Christmas holidays and Chet suggests a winter camping trip. After racing and defeating a rival iceboat, they decide to explore Cabin Island. Upon landing, they discover fresh footprints and are confronted by a surly stranger who orders them off the island.
Chapter 2
Heading for Trouble
The Hardy boys and Chet Morton discuss the strange behavior of Elroy Jefferson, who ordered them off Cabin Island. They recall that Jefferson is an antique dealer whose car they once recovered from auto thieves. As they sail back to Bayport, they encounter a reckless iceboat piloted by Ike Nash and Tad Carson, which nearly collides with them in a dangerous maneuver.
Chapter 3
A Strange Note
After a near collision with another iceboat piloted by Ike Nash and Tad Carson, the Hardy boys and Chet Morton return home. There, they receive a mysterious typewritten note delivered by Elroy Jefferson's chauffeur, which puzzles even their father, Fenton Hardy. The note prompts the boys to investigate further.
Chapter 4
IV: Holiday Plans
The Hardy boys receive a mysterious note from Elroy Jefferson requesting a meeting. They discuss possible reasons, including a reward for recovering his car. They meet Callie Shaw and Iola Morton, who praise Frank for his iceboating heroics. Later, they encounter Biff Hooper, who suggests a winter camping trip during Christmas holidays. At Jefferson's house, they overhear a heated argument between Jefferson and Mr. Hanleigh over Cabin Island, which Jefferson refuses to sell.
Chapter 5
V: Mr. Hanleigh
Frank and Joe Hardy meet Elroy Jefferson, who thanks them for recovering his car and gives each a $100 reward. They learn that Mr. Hanleigh, who had ordered them off Cabin Island, has no authority there; Jefferson owns the island and refuses to sell it to Hanleigh. Jefferson grants the boys permission to use the island for a winter outing and gives them the cabin keys.
