> Mr. Graves in The Mystery of 31, New Inn by R. Austin Freeman.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Graves, poor Graves

**First appearance:** 0005-iii-a-chiel-s-amang-ye-takin-notes

## Snapshot

The unseen invalid at the center of a poisoned-bedroom mystery, whose corpse-like figure haunts Jervis long after the visit ends.

## Who they are

Graves is the patient Jervis is summoned to treat in a shuttered house reached by a blinded carriage, and everything about the arrangement suggests conspiracy rather than care. Thorndyke judges his chances of survival infinitesimal, reading the elaborate precautions as proof of a strong and deliberate motive. His probable fate transforms a strange consultation into a murder inquiry and sets the whole investigation in motion.
