Graves is the patient Jervis is summoned to treat in a shuttered house reached by a blinded carriage, and everything about the arrangement suggests conspiracy rather than care. Thorndyke judges his chances of survival infinitesimal, reading the elaborate precautions as proof of a strong and deliberate motive. His probable fate transforms a strange consultation into a murder inquiry and sets the whole investigation in motion.
