# H. Weiss — The Mystery of 31, New Inn character guide

> H. Weiss in The Mystery of 31, New Inn by R. Austin Freeman.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Weiss, Weiss, Mr. H. Weiss, Dr. H. Weiss

**First appearance:** 0003-i-the-mysterious-patient

## Snapshot

A German doctor who summons a stranger to attend a patient he will not name, and whose evasions make the physician in attendance suspect poison.

## Who they are

Weiss writes a note with no address and no date, sends a cabman to fetch a doctor he has never met, and then resists the restorative measures his patient plainly needs. Jervis leaves the first visit convinced that poison is being administered for some purpose, and that Weiss is the man to stop. He is the early arc's most unsettling presence — a host whose hospitality feels like a trap, and whose motives the reader cannot yet name.
