# Pencroff — The Mysterious Island character guide > Pencroff in The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Professor Pencroff, Captain Pencroff **First appearance:** 0001-i ## Snapshot A bluff, tireless sailor who can rig a boat or roast a meal from nothing, he argues hardest for the voyages that keep hope alive. ## Who they are Pencroff is the colony's practical heart, a man of appetite and action who chafes against Cyrus Smith's patient caution and longs to build a real ship and see what lies beyond the horizon. His stubborn confidence—he insists on taking young Herbert on a risky reconnaissance—collides with the engineer's protective instinct, and their arguments reveal how much each man stakes on the others' survival. Without his craft and his refusal to accept a small life, the castaways would have shelter and food but never a future. ## Relationships ### [Cyrus Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/cyrus_smith) _friendship_ Cyrus Smith and Pencroff share a deep mutual respect and camaraderie, with Pencroff often acting as the engineer's enthusiastic right hand in survival efforts. ### [Herbert Brown](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/herbert_brown) _friendship_ Pencroff acts as a mentor and father figure to young Herbert, teaching him practical skills and sharing a warm, protective bond. ### [Gideon Spilett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/gideon_spilett) _friendship_ Gideon Spilett and Pencroff share a friendly, bantering camaraderie, with the journalist often humoring the sailor's exuberance. ### [Neb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/neb) _friendship_ Neb and Pencroff are good-natured companions, working together on practical tasks with mutual respect and occasional teasing. ### [Ayrton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/ayrton) _friendship_ Ayrton and Pencroff develop a solid working friendship, with Pencroff initially wary but eventually accepting Ayrton's redemption. ### [Top](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/top) _friendship_ Pencroff treats Top as a useful and beloved member of the group, often working alongside the dog. ### [Cyrus Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/cyrus_smith) _friendship_ Cyrus Smith and Pencroff share a deep mutual respect and camaraderie, with Pencroff often acting as the engineer's enthusiastic right hand in survival efforts. ### [Herbert Brown](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/herbert_brown) _friendship_ Pencroff acts as a mentor and father figure to young Herbert, teaching him practical skills and sharing a warm, protective bond. ### [Neb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/neb) _friendship_ Neb and Pencroff are good-natured companions, working together on practical tasks with mutual respect and occasional teasing. ### [Neb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/neb) _friendship_ Neb and Pencroff are good-natured companions, working together on practical tasks with mutual respect and occasional teasing. ### [Gideon Spilett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/gideon_spilett) _friendship_ Gideon Spilett and Pencroff share a friendly, bantering camaraderie, with the journalist often humoring the sailor's exuberance. ## In the story ### [Part I: Shipwrecked in the Air](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/part-i-shipwrecked-in-the-air) Sailor and resourceful member of the group; assists in the escape and survival efforts. ### [The Hurricane of 1865](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/i) One of the five passengers; likely the sailor who suggests cutting the basket. ### [II](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/ii) Sailor who proposes the balloon escape; bold and practical, he assists in preparing the balloon and joins the voyage. ### [III](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/iii) Identifies that they are on an island and later advises waiting for low tide to cross the channel. ### [IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/iv) Leads the exploration, gathers wood, and plans the camp at the Chimneys. ### [Arranging the Chimneys](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/v) Leads the effort to arrange the Chimneys and start a fire; loses his matchbox and becomes deeply frustrated, but successfully lights a fire with the last match. ### [The Castaways' Inventory](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/vi) Leads the hunting expedition, invents a fishing line to catch tetras, and demonstrates resourcefulness. ### [VII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/vii) Prepares supper, debates Smith's fate, and leads the group into the storm following Top. ### [VIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/viii) The sailor helps construct the litter and carries Smith back to the Chimneys.
