# Herbert Brown — The Mysterious Island character guide > Herbert Brown in The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Herbert, young Herbert Brown, Master Herbert **First appearance:** 0001-i ## Snapshot A bright, eager boy who offers the last of the mussels to his leader and soaks up every lesson the island can teach. ## Who they are Herbert is the youngest of the castaways and the colony's adopted son, a naturalist's apprentice whose curiosity turns each plant, bird, and stone into a lesson. His youth creates the story's sharpest tenderness: the others measure every risk against his safety, and Pencroff's wish to take him on a dangerous voyage becomes a quiet test of trust. He matters because his growth mirrors the colony's—fragile at first, then increasingly capable and self-reliant. ## Relationships ### [Pencroff](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/pencroff) _friendship_ Pencroff acts as a mentor and father figure to young Herbert, teaching him practical skills and sharing a warm, protective bond. ### [Cyrus Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/cyrus_smith) _friendship_ Cyrus Smith treats Herbert with paternal care and intellectual guidance, fostering the boy's growth into a capable young man. ### [Gideon Spilett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/gideon_spilett) _friendship_ Gideon Spilett takes a kindly, instructive interest in Herbert, sharing his knowledge and treating him like a younger brother. ### [Neb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/neb) _friendship_ Herbert and Neb share a warm, affectionate bond, with Neb often looking after the boy with gentle care. ### [Ayrton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/ayrton) _friendship_ Ayrton and Herbert share a gentle, redemptive friendship, with Herbert's innocence helping Ayrton reintegrate into the group. ### [Top](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/top) _friendship_ Herbert and Top are playful companions, with the dog often accompanying the boy on explorations. ### [Cyrus Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/cyrus_smith) _friendship_ Cyrus Smith treats Herbert with paternal care and intellectual guidance, fostering the boy's growth into a capable young man. ### [Pencroff](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/pencroff) _friendship_ Pencroff acts as a mentor and father figure to young Herbert, teaching him practical skills and sharing a warm, protective bond. ### [Cyrus Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/cyrus_smith) _friendship_ Cyrus Smith treats Herbert with paternal care and intellectual guidance, fostering the boy's growth into a capable young man. ### [Pencroff](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/pencroff) _friendship_ Pencroff acts as a mentor and father figure to young Herbert, teaching him practical skills and sharing a warm, protective bond. ### [Gideon Spilett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/gideon_spilett) _friendship_ Gideon Spilett takes a kindly, instructive interest in Herbert, sharing his knowledge and treating him like a younger brother. ### [Neb](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/characters/neb) _friendship_ Herbert and Neb share a warm, affectionate bond, with Neb often looking after the boy with gentle care. ## In the story ### [Part I: Shipwrecked in the Air](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_mysterious_island_se/chapters/part-i-shipwrecked-in-the-air) Young boy and Pencroff's protégé;
