Chapter 1
Part I: Shipwrecked in the Air
During the American Civil War, five prisoners of war escape from Richmond in a hot air balloon. A violent storm carries them over the ocean, and they are eventually shipwrecked on an unknown island. The group includes Cyrus Smith, Gideon Spilett, Pencroff, Herbert Brown, and Neb. They struggle to survive after the crash, and Smith is swept away by a wave, leaving the others to search for him.
Chapter 2
The Hurricane of 1865
During a violent hurricane in March 1865, a balloon carrying five passengers and a dog is swept across the Pacific. The castaways struggle to keep the balloon aloft by throwing overboard all their possessions, including the basket itself. After a perilous descent, they sight land and crash onto an unknown shore, but one passenger is swept away by a wave just before landing.
Chapter 3

The chapter recounts the daring escape of five prisoners of war from Richmond during the American Civil War. Led by engineer Cyrus Smith, the group—including reporter Gideon Spilett, servant Neb, sailor Pencroff, and young Herbert Brown—seizes the opportunity of a violent storm to steal a balloon and flee the besieged city. After a perilous five-day aerial voyage, the balloon crashes on an unknown island, leaving Cyrus Smith missing and his companions stranded.
Chapter 4
III
The castaways realize they are stranded on a small, barren island after Cyrus Smith is swept away by a wave. Despite desperate searches and calls through the night, they find no trace of him. At dawn, the fog lifts to reveal a larger landmass to the west, separated by a channel. Neb bravely swims across, while the others wait for low tide to ford the channel, hoping to find Smith alive.
Chapter 5
IV
Pencroff and Herbert explore the coast, find a river, gather wood, and discover a rocky shelter they call the Chimneys. They collect lithodomes for food and prepare a timber float to transport firewood, while awaiting the return of their companions.
