# Major Blunt — The Murder of Roger Ackroyd character guide

> Major Blunt in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hector Blunt, Blunt, Major Hector Blunt

**First appearance:** 0005-iv-dinner-at-fernly

## Snapshot

A taciturn big-game hunter whose mahogany face and far-away grey eyes make him seem permanently absent — even while standing squarely in Ackroyd's drawing room.

## Who they are

Hector Blunt has shot more wild animals than any man alive, yet his odd, enduring friendship with the gregarious Roger Ackroyd puzzles everyone who knows them both. He speaks in jerky fragments, avoids women by reputation, and seems to watch something happening in Timbuktu rather than the room in front of him. His silence at Fernly's tense dinner table, and his habit of pacing the terrace at odd hours, make him a figure the investigation cannot quite read.
