# The Young Girl — The Mother character guide

> The Young Girl in The Mother by Pearl S. Buck.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the young girl, herself, hers

**First appearance:** 0000-i

## Snapshot

The eldest daughter in a house crowded with children, already rehearsing motherhood before she has any of her own.

## Who they are

She is the girl in her father's household who runs to pick up a weeping child, whose smallness weakens her heart even when she shouts at the ones under her feet. That same instinct will follow her into marriage, where a husband alone is never enough and only a child growing inside her makes the act complete. Her hunger to hold and smell and fondle whatever is young and leaning on her is the deep, unexamined engine of the whole story.
