The Moonstone · Question
Who is Godfrey Ablewhite?
Answer
Godfrey Ablewhite is a popular philanthropist engaged to Rachel Verinder — handsome, charitable in public, and secretly embezzled and greedy. He exploits Franklin Blake’s sleepwalking theft to grab the Moonstone and plans marriage for fortune. When his double life collapses, his death in a lodging house reveals the gem’s hiding place.
Ablewhite embodies appearance vs. reality: sermons and subscriptions mask theft. Collins makes him worse than unconscious Blake because he chooses fraud. Compare to Miss Clack’s religious performance — both use moral language for self-interest, though Clack is comic where Godfrey is predatory.
