# Mr. Septimus Luker — The Moonstone character guide

> Mr. Septimus Luker in The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Luker, Luker

**First appearance:** 0022-xvi

## Snapshot

A wary London moneylender whose name appears on the Indian's card, drawing him into the Moonstone's secret traffic and its dangers.

## Who they are

Luker is the professional lender to whom the disguised Indian is referred, a man cautious enough to send a stranger to Murthwaite rather than advance money himself on such suspicious security. His name on the card links him to the diamond's shadowy movements through London, and his refusal hints at how carefully he guards his own interests. As the gem's fate tangles with pawnshops and creditors, Luker becomes a pivot between the respectable world and the criminal one.
