# Cesar — The Mirror of the Sea character guide

> Cesar in The Mirror of the Sea by Joseph Conrad.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0057-the-tremolino

## Snapshot

Dominic's nephew, a lean and livid youth with parchment skin and yellow eyes, whose depraved nature and talent for eavesdropping make him a viper aboard the Tremolino.

## Who they are

Cesar is the shame of his uncle Dominic—a creature so bloodless and sinister that Dominic suspects a witch swapped him in the cradle for a starved devil's spawn. He vanishes heels-overhead when cuffed, sneaks behind casks to spy on private conversations, and once went overboard in the old harbour only to be left hanging on a hawser while Dominic calmly finished his business. His desire to become a locksmith—to pick locks, Dominic suspects—and his willingness to steal or perhaps poison suggest a treachery that will test the Tremolino's crew in ways brute force cannot correct.
