Cesar is the shame of his uncle Dominic—a creature so bloodless and sinister that Dominic suspects a witch swapped him in the cradle for a starved devil's spawn. He vanishes heels-overhead when cuffed, sneaks behind casks to spy on private conversations, and once went overboard in the old harbour only to be left hanging on a hawser while Dominic calmly finished his business. His desire to become a locksmith—to pick locks, Dominic suspects—and his willingness to steal or perhaps poison suggest a treachery that will test the Tremolino's crew in ways brute force cannot correct.
