## Who they are

Hyde is caught in the worst possible position: no money, a knife in his pocket, and a story about a muffled man in black that no policeman wants to credit. He is sharpened by hunger into an odd clarity, able to describe the stranger's dress in detail even as his own credibility collapses. Viner's decision to stand by him — old school loyalty against the weight of circumstantial evidence — gives the investigation one of its most human stakes.
