The smallest of the Middle Five, Bob is quick to gather stones and clap with delight, and quick to cry when Jim hisses in his face.

## Who they are

Bob sits with Frank under the walnut tree, watching a sling being cut from an old shoe and darting off to fetch rusty nails and pebbles in record time. When Jim points a warty finger at him and hisses, Bob buries his face and weeps, drawing Edwin to his defense. His smallness and eagerness make him the gang's tender center, the boy whose tears measure how much cruelty the school allows.
