## Who they are

Gid never appears in the scene himself, only in Jim's tale of a boast made at the spring, yet his name is enough to set the boys against each other. Edwin warns that Gid doesn't fight fair, and the gang debates whether Warren can use the waist-and-chin trick Frank teaches him. Gid's reputation as a cheater turns a boy's quarrel into a test of the Middle Five's honor and their willingness to thrash his whole gang if he breaks the rules.
