A homesick Omaha boy in fringed buckskin, Frank is the narrator whose first bewildering days at the mission school open the world of the Middle Five.

## Who they are

Frank arrives at the Presbyterian boarding school sobbing for his mother, comforted by a big boy who hands him a wooden dog and promises friendship. His first supper, prayer, and headlong tumble down a dark stairway mark the strangeness of institutional life. As narrator he watches, teaches, and remembers, giving the Middle Five their voice and their mischief.
