# Mycroft Holmes — The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes character guide

> Mycroft Holmes in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mycroft

**First appearance:** 0009-the-greek-interpreter

## Snapshot

Sherlock's elder brother, whose deductive gifts outstrip even the detective's, yet who cannot stir himself from his armchair to use them.

## Who they are

Mycroft inhabits a peculiar orbit—known in government corridors, unknown to the public, a mind too vast and too inert for ordinary work. Where Sherlock chases criminals through London streets, Mycroft sits still and lets the world come to him, and the contrast between the brothers is the point: same genius, opposite temperaments. He matters because he shows what Holmes might become without the restless hunger that drives him, and because his quiet influence reaches into cases Holmes could never touch alone.
