Chapter 1
Pedro, the Boaster
During a fierce storm at a tavern in Reina de Los Angeles, Sergeant Pedro Gonzales boasts loudly about his desire to capture the notorious highwayman Señor Zorro, dismissing him as a coward and a thief, while the landlord and others nervously listen. Gonzales's tirade is interrupted when the door suddenly opens, hinting at Zorro's possible arrival.
Chapter 2
On the Heels of the Storm
Don Diego Vega visits a tavern during a storm, where Sergeant Gonzales boasts about capturing Zorro. Don Diego feigns disinterest in violence and leaves, later returning to find Gonzales still boasting. The chapter establishes Don Diego's public persona as an indolent, peace-loving aristocrat and his peculiar friendship with the boastful sergeant.
Chapter 3
III: Señor Zorro Pays a Visit
Señor Zorro enters a tavern during a storm, revealing himself to Sergeant Gonzales and his soldiers. He confronts Gonzales for beating a native, threatens the group with a pistol, and challenges the sergeant to a duel, demonstrating his skill and daring.
Chapter 4
IV: Swords Clash and Pedro Explains
Sergeant Gonzales fights Señor Zorro at the tavern, but is disarmed and humiliated when Zorro slaps him. Zorro escapes through a window as townspeople arrive. Gonzales later spins a tale to save face, claiming he was handicapped by a broken thumb and Zorro's pistol. Don Diego Vega arrives and innocently taunts Gonzales by asking for a heroic account of the fight, further embarrassing the sergeant.
Chapter 5
A Ride in the Morning
Don Diego Vega rides to the Pulido hacienda, where he is warmly received by Don Carlos Pulido, who hopes that a connection with the powerful Vega family will improve his fortunes. They discuss the recent exploits of Señor Zorro, who disarmed Sergeant Gonzales at the tavern.
