# The Doctor — The Maracot Deep character guide

> The Doctor in The Maracot Deep by Arthur Conan Doyle.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Doc

**First appearance:** 0000-i

## Snapshot

The expedition's physician, a quiet presence aboard the Stratford whose medical eye and dry commentary steady the crew through the long descent.

## Who they are

The Doctor is part of the small company Maracot assembles for the deep-sea voyage, tending to the physical welfare of men confined in a steel shell for months. He belongs to the same cramped world of the Stratford as Headley and Scanlan, sharing its laboratory, its winches, and its gathering sense that the ship is a mystery even to those aboard. His steady professionalism is one of the ordinary human anchors the narrative keeps hold of as the expedition slips past the edge of the known.
