## Who they are

Manda is one of the chiefs of the underwater civilization, a bearded figure who communicates through signs and, later, through a screen that renders thought itself visible. He is curious about the strangers from the surface rather than hostile, guiding them through the exit chamber and out onto the ocean bed to recover their wrecked shell. His patient authority makes him the expedition's first bridge to a world that has been waiting, apparently, for visitors.
